Localization of E-Learning Content

eLearning localization doesn't just "happen"!
It requires careful planning and implementation.

Expanding an organization globally presents unique challenges. E-learning localization can be used by employers to enhance their employees’ skills and knowledge, while saving time and resources. Organizations can also use it to train their customers and partners in order to enhance adoption, customer retention, and eventually revenue. E-Learning is ushering forth a revolution also in the education/training sector, simply because it removes the barriers of distance, the number of people who can take a course, the time of the day/night they can take the course etc.

What is E-Learning Localization, and why it is important

E-learning localization is the process of adapting learning materials to a specificlocale, including the local language and culture. Its purpose is to make training materials understandable to the local audience.

Localization considers cultural disparities that might offend sensibilities. For example, an image of a thumbs-up may be seen as a sign of encouragement by American readers, but it is a very rude gesture in the Middle East. The best way to avoid such instances is to learn as much as possible about the country’s etiquette, communication style and values and incorporate it into your e-learning course. Alternatively, you can work with local localization experts who are experts in the country’s culture. Localization takes into account cultural nuances and adapts courses to the culture of the target audience.

If you ignore cultural differences in your e-Learning courses, you risk alienating a large portion of your audience, thereby losing revenue. It is important to understand the traditions and customs of the people of your target country. Paying attention to these points will ensure your content looks local, clear, and more appealing to your audience.

Choosing an E-Learning localization provider

Localizing of e-Learning content is a complex process, and requires a broad range of capabilities—from text translation, to video voiceover and editing, and mastery of many different tools—such as the e-Learning tool that your courseware is in.

Depending on the e-Learning publishing software you use to develop your courseware, localization can be easy or extremely tedious. Not all e-Learning authoring software supports localization services well. Some tools make it easier to export all translated content into a standard format that translators can easily translate.

Make sure the localization provider you choose has proven experience creating localized versions of the courseware in your portfolio using your preferred authoring software.
